What Is SS-31?
SS-31, also called elamipretide, is a lab-made peptide studied for its interaction with mitochondria, the small structures inside cells that help turn nutrients into usable energy.
How Does It Work?
It interacts with the inner mitochondrial membrane, including a fat-like molecule called cardiolipin. This membrane holds much of the equipment cells use to make ATP, their main energy-carrying molecule.
Why Is It Studied?
When this membrane is disrupted, energy production can suffer. Scientists study SS-31 to understand how membrane structure, energy production, and chemical stress are connected.
